Independent System Assessment
When systems are unstable, underperforming, or approaching commissioning, Renucci provides independent technical insight based on real operating conditions.
Focus is placed on understanding how the system is actually behaving – identifying underlying causes, assessing operating conditions, and providing clear, practical recommendations.
Assessment considers blower operation in the context of the wider aeration and air distribution system, rather than the blower in isolation.
The Gap Between Design and Operation
Blower and aeration systems are often delivered across multiple disciplines, including mechanical installation, controls integration, process requirements, and OEM commissioning.
In many cases, the blower manufacturer focuses on protecting the blower itself, while controls engineers implement the required control philosophy and operational strategy.
The result is that systems can become operationally unstable even when individual components appear to be functioning correctly.
Issues commonly originate from the interaction between:
- blower operating limits
- valve behaviour and sequencing
- VSD control strategy
- pressure targets
- process demand
- system resistance under real operating conditions
This is where system-level assessment becomes critical.
Renucci works collaboratively alongside appointed controls, PLC, SCADA, OEM, and project personnel where required, helping bridge the gap between blower operation, control philosophy, and real-world system behaviour.
Typical Issues
- Blowers repeatedly tripping with no clear cause
- Systems not performing as expected under load
- Pre-commissioning stage with uncertainty around readiness
- Apparent thermal or operational instability without clear explanation
- Control behaviour not aligning with operating conditions
Renucci provides independent engineering assessment and advisory services and does not undertake construction, installation, or repair works.

Services
Independent technical assessment and diagnostic support for blower and aeration systems operating within water and wastewater environments.
Pre-Commissioning Inspection & Verification
Independent assessment of blower and aeration systems prior to commissioning.
Focus is placed on verifying system readiness, identifying potential issues, and ensuring conditions are aligned before OEM involvement.
This includes evaluation of system configuration, pressure conditions, startup sequencing, valve strategy, and control approach relative to expected operating behaviour.
Renucci’s experience is primarily based around positive displacement and hybrid blower systems, including extensive exposure to Aerzen equipment within water and wastewater infrastructure.
Final commissioning, performance sign-off, and OEM-specific commissioning activities remain the responsibility of the equipment manufacturer or appointed commissioning provider where applicable.
Control & Operational Assessment
Evaluation of system control approach, including VSD operation, valve strategy, startup sequencing, blower staging, and interaction with process signals.
The assessment focuses on whether system behaviour and control logic support stable blower operation and appropriate operating conditions during startup, shutdown, and normal running.
This includes identifying conditions that may place unnecessary stress on blower equipment, such as excessive back pressure, unsuitable control interaction, or incorrect valve sequencing.
Recommendations are provided in line with recognised blower operating principles and practical experience working with positive displacement and hybrid blower systems, including extensive exposure to Aerzen equipment.
Assessment may be carried out alongside appointed PLC, SCADA, or controls engineers where required.
The role of Renucci remains focused on operational assessment, verification, and advisory input relating to blower operating conditions and system behaviour rather than direct control system modification.
Fault Finding & Root Cause Analysis
Structured diagnostic assessment of blower-related issues, including trips, instability, temperature-related faults, and abnormal operating behaviour.
The focus is on identifying underlying causes across:
- System conditions
- Control behaviour
- Operating environment
- Pressure response and load conditions
Rather than isolating the issue to the blower alone.
Assessment may include review of operating pressures, load conditions, and system behaviour relative to expected blower operating range.
System Performance & Operational Verification
Assessment of how systems are operating under real conditions.
This includes analysis of pressure behaviour, airflow response, system resistance, thermal behaviour, operating stability, and response under load to identify inefficiencies or abnormal operation.
Assessment may include observation of vibration behaviour, operating temperatures, pressure response, and general mechanical stability relative to expected operating conditions.
Assessment considers blower operation in relation to the wider aeration and air distribution system, rather than the blower in isolation.
Assessment may involve comparison of observed operating behaviour against available manufacturer performance information, serial data, or known equipment configuration where obtainable.
Where original technical data is unavailable or equipment configuration differs from documented information, findings are based on best available operating evidence and observed system behaviour.
Findings are based on observed site conditions and correlation with expected operating behaviour and available performance information.
Technical Reporting & Advisory
All services result in clear, structured technical reporting.
Reports outline:
- Observed system behaviour
- Identified issues
- Likely causes
- Practical recommendations
Reporting can be aligned with project requirements and operational considerations relevant to water and wastewater infrastructure environments.
Findings are based on observed site conditions and available operating information at the time of assessment.
Final decisions remain with the contractor, asset owner, equipment manufacturer, or appointed design authority where applicable.
Operational Condition Verification
Assessment of blower operating condition under live or representative operating conditions.
This may include observation of vibration behaviour, operating temperatures, pressure response, load characteristics, and general mechanical stability relative to expected operating conditions.
Assessment may also involve comparison against available manufacturer performance information, serial data, or known equipment configuration where obtainable.
The purpose is to identify signs of abnormal operation, excessive stress, instability, or conditions that may increase risk to blower reliability or long-term operation.
Where original technical data is unavailable or equipment configuration differs from documented information, findings are based on best available operating evidence and observed system behaviour.
Assessment is observational and advisory in nature and does not replace specialist vibration analysis, OEM inspection, or formal condition monitoring programmes.
About Renucci
Renucci is an independent engineering consultancy operated by Keith Halligan, specialising in blower and aeration systems within water and wastewater infrastructure.
Keith has over 10 years’ experience working with positive displacement and hybrid blower systems, including extensive hands-on experience with Aerzen equipment, commissioning environments, fault diagnostics, and operational assessment under live site conditions.
The focus is on understanding how systems behave in the real world – not simply how they were intended to operate on paper.
Assessment considers the interaction between:
- Mechanical equipment (blowers)
- Process conditions (aeration demand, airflow behaviour, system resistance)
- Control systems (PLC logic, valve sequencing, pressure control, VSD operation)
This system-level approach allows issues to be assessed within the context of the wider aeration and air distribution system rather than isolating the blower alone.
Particular focus is placed on operating conditions, pressure behaviour, thermal loading, control interaction, startup conditions, and overall system response under live or representative operating conditions.
Renucci’s role is to provide independent technical assessment, verification, diagnostics, and practical advisory input to support contractors, project teams, and operational environments.
Approach
The approach is simple:
- Assess what the system is doing
- Understand why it is happening
- Identify operating risks and abnormal behaviour
- Provide clear, practical recommendations
Assessment is based on observed site conditions, available operating information, and practical understanding developed through real-world exposure to blower and aeration systems within live infrastructure environments.
Independence
Renucci operates independently and is not tied to any equipment manufacturer or contractor.
Assessment and advisory input may be carried out alongside appointed PLC, SCADA, OEM, or project engineering teams where required.
The role of Renucci remains focused on independent technical assessment, verification, diagnostics, and operational advisory support rather than construction, installation, repair, or direct control system modification.
Final commissioning, performance sign-off, and implementation responsibility remain with the appointed contractor, equipment manufacturer, controls provider, or project delivery team where applicable.

Example Assessments
Examples of system assessment, diagnostic investigation, and pre-commissioning support within water and wastewater infrastructure.
Repeated Blower Trips & Thermal-Related Operating Failures
Example Assessment 1.
Context
A wastewater aeration system was experiencing repeated blower trips and ongoing reliability issues during normal operation.
Multiple blower failures had previously occurred on the site over time, with evidence suggesting excessive operating pressure and thermal expansion had contributed to internal damage and operational instability.
Despite previous intervention attempts, uncertainty remained around whether the root cause originated from the blower equipment itself, system conditions, or control interaction within the wider aeration process.
Concerns included:
- recurring pressure-related trips
- elevated operating temperatures
- inconsistent blower loading
- repeated thermal-related operating failures
- uncertainty around overall system behaviour under live operating conditions
Assessment Approach
An independent operational assessment was carried out under live operating conditions.
Assessment included:
- observation of blower behaviour during operation
- comparison of blower discharge conditions against line pressure behaviour
- review of valve sequencing and control interaction
- observation of operating stability and vibration behaviour
- assessment of operating conditions relative to expected blower operating range
- review of available manufacturer information and installed configuration where obtainable
Focus was placed on understanding how the blower was interacting with the wider aeration and air distribution system rather than assessing the machine in isolation.
Findings
Assessment identified that system operating conditions were intermittently generating excessive back pressure at the blower during periods of valve transition and pressure control response.
Control interaction and valve sequencing behaviour were contributing to unstable operating conditions and excessive thermal loading during periods of varying demand.
The assessment identified that the system was relying too heavily on downstream pressure relief response rather than preventing excessive operating pressure conditions from occurring in the first place.
Observed operating behaviour indicated conditions capable of increasing thermal stress and contributing to repeated internal blower damage associated with thermal expansion events.
Outcome
- Underlying cause of the trips identified through system-level assessment
- Technical recommendations provided regarding valve sequencing, control interaction, and operating philosophy
- Recommendations included introduction and review of suitable pressure-based protection and trip strategy to better protect blower operating conditions before excessive thermal loading could occur
- Reduced reliance on downstream relief response as the primary protection mechanism
- Improved understanding of actual operating conditions under live demand variation
The revised operating approach helped reduce the likelihood of repeated thermal-related blower failures, operational disruption, and further high-cost equipment damage.
By identifying unstable operating conditions earlier and improving system protection strategy, the assessment supported a more controlled operating environment capable of reducing future repair costs and avoidable equipment stress.
Pre-Commissioning Readiness Assessment - Aeration System
Example Assessment 2.
Context
A new wastewater aeration installation approaching commissioning stage required independent assessment prior to OEM involvement and transition into live operation.
The project remained within construction and upgrade phase, with aeration tanks not yet fully operational and only a shallow water level present above the diffuser system.
The contractor required additional confidence that installed conditions, startup behaviour, and system configuration were aligned before full operational commissioning commenced.
Concerns included:
- uncertainty around valve configuration and startup conditions
- risk of failed commissioning or delayed handover
- uncertainty around diffuser and air distribution performance
- risk of equipment damage during initial startup and operational transition
Assessment Approach
An independent pre-commissioning assessment was carried out focusing on blower and aeration system readiness.
Assessment included:
- review of installed blower and pipework configuration
- verification of motor rotation direction prior to belt installation and full operational loading
- review of valve positioning and startup sequencing logic
- verification of control interaction relative to expected operating behaviour
- assessment of pressure conditions and system resistance
- operational verification of blower behaviour under representative conditions where possible
- review of available technical information and installed configuration
Because tanks had not yet been fully filled, controlled low-level operational testing could be carried out safely above the diffuser system prior to full live process operation.
This allowed diffuser pattern testing and early identification of potential air distribution or leakage issues before full tank loading and commissioning took place.
Particular focus was placed on ensuring operating conditions were appropriate for safe blower operation during startup and transition into live service.
Findings
Assessment identified multiple system conditions that were not fully aligned with expected operating requirements prior to commissioning.
These included:
- startup sequencing concerns capable of creating unstable operating conditions
- valve strategy issues with potential to increase blower loading during transition states
- inconsistencies between available technical information and observed installed configuration
- pressure behaviour requiring further review prior to full operational commissioning
The assessment also identified areas where unsuitable startup conditions could potentially place unnecessary stress on blower equipment during initial operation.
Early diffuser testing also assisted in identifying potential air distribution and leakage concerns before full tank operation commenced.
Outcome
- Key issues identified prior to formal commissioning stage
